Affordances in Cyber Physical Systems

Invited guest lecture for the 3A Institute's graduate cohort.
The lecture was rooted in ideas from Jenny Davis’s recent book "How Artifacts Afford: The Power and Politics of Everyday Things". Students worked through the main ideas of the book, which offers an operational model for how technologies reflect and affect human social behavior. Students applied the ideas to cyber physical systems through a series of group work activities. In these activities, students interrogated the social effects of existing technologies for diverse publics. They also had the opportunity to reimagine existing technologies in ways that would shift those technologies' social outcomes.
