Intentional Design: A Workshop for Tech Startups

August 12 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM AEST. Online event. Register here by midday on the 11th of August.

Learn how to optimise good, minimise harm, and design with intention using a research-based method called "Affordance Thinking".

About this event

As a tech startup, you’re making a lot of decisions right now that will shape your organisation’s future and quite possibly, the future of society.

When it comes to product design, small decisions can have a big social impact-for better or for worse. When it's for better, your company can thrive and so can your users. When it's for worse, you may create social harms and suffer reputational damage.

Led by Dr. Jenny Davis, author of How Artifacts Afford, this workshop will introduce you to Affordance Thinking and assist you in applying this design method to your own products. It will be rigorous and practical, applied and grounded in years of research. And fun!

At the end of the 90-minute workshop you will leave with:

  • An understanding of the Affordance Thinking framework and how it applies to your product(s)

  • An understanding of how your product(s) currently request, demand, encourage, discourage, refuse and/or allow certain behaviours and the benefits and harms that could emerge as a result

  • Tangible next steps that you can embed in your organisation to assist you in mitigating harms and optimising benefits of your products as you continue to design and iterate on them

The workshop will be online, with targeted content for the participants in attendance.

Who is this for?

This workshop will suit tech startup teams who need a way of stepping back from their design process to ask some critical questions. We encourage participants to come in small teams of 2-4 people including designers, developers, CEOs, CTOs, COOs and founders. Individual participants are also very welcome. We look forward to working with startups at every stage of development.
