Artificial intelligence and litigation against the government
Artificial intelligence and litigation against the government
ACT Law Society, 10:30-11:30am 30 September 2020
Presentation by Dr Will Bateman
Governments are high-intensity adopters of the collection of technologies often described as ‘artificial intelligence’ (or AI), which include algorithmic decision-making, machine learning and biometric data collection. These technologies bring vast efficiencies of cost, speed and scale, but also present significant challenges to the basic relationship between citizen and state, and the orthodox avenues for challenging government decisions and suing public sector agencies for compensation. This seminar addressed a collection of complex legal issues which arise in litigation against governments which use AI, including administrative law and private law claims.
