Human Rights Commission Roundtable Discussion

Seth Lazar, Chelle Adamson, Jenny Davis, Claire Benn, Will Bateman, and Damian Clifford

Webinar hosted by the HMI project at ANU, and the Human Rights Commission 3-5 pm, 28 May 2020.

Humanising Machine Intelligence convened a virtual roundtable consultation with Human Rights Commissioner Edward Santow to discuss the Human Rights and Technology Project on 28 May 2020.  The Commission released a Discussion Paper in December 2019, which makes proposals to safeguard human rights and encourage accessible, equal, and accountable use of new technology in Australia. An Executive Summary of the findings and proposals can be found here.

HMI brought a group of senior experts and decision makers together across academia, industry and government to support the important work of the Commission. Given the professional expertise on these issues at the roundtable, the discussion focussed on Part B of the Discussion Paper on AI-informed decision making.

Roundtable topics included issues raised in Chapter 5: AI-Informed Decision-Making, Chapter 6: Accountable AI-Informed Decision-Making and Chapter 7: Co- and self-regulatory measures for AI-informed decision-making.

Contributions from this discussion will help inform the next iteration of the Human Rights and Technology Discussion Paper.
